Get Involved!
As a School Council member, you can contribute to the education of students in your school. Education is a partnership involving parents, students, teachers, principals, school boards, government, and the community. Your involvement in the Council gives you the opportunity to strengthen that partnership and be part of a dedicated team working to ensure a high quality and accountable education system for the children of Ontario.
School councils play a vital role in the education system in Ontario. They provide a forum through which parents can help improve student achievement and school performance.
Parental involvement is one of the most significant factors contributing to a child's success in school. When parents are involved in their children's education, the level of student achievement increases. Students attend school regularly, they complete homework in a consistent manner, and demonstrate a more positive attitude toward school.
The personal advantages of becoming a school council member are:
- being an important partner in the education system, whose views are valued
- contributing to the shared goal of improving student achievement
- having a vehicle for expressing opinions
- keeping informed about what is happening at the school, the board, and provincial level of education.
The School Council ran several workshops for parents last year that included topics on helping our students with literacy, understanding the benefits and dangers of the Internet (Cyberproofing) and reviewing the main ideas of the grade 9 math curriculum.
If you are interested in your children's education, School Council is a great place for you to get involved in your child's education and discuss concerns you may have and share your ideas to improve student success in school.
